As General Counsel, Mr. Shively is responsible for overseeing all legal activities and services for NYLIM. These services include advice and guidance with respect to mutual funds; private equity, private debt and real estate leasing and lending transactions; investment management and vendor agreements; product development activities and corporate governance.

A seasoned legal professional, Mr. Shively brought with him almost twenty years of experience in securities and investment management when he joined NYLIM in 2006 as deputy general counsel, responsible for the firm’s corporate governance as well as the legal affairs of NYLIM Real Estate, Retirement Plan Services, Guaranteed Products, Madison Capital Funding and NYLCAP.  Prior to his joining the firm, Mr. Shively was managing director and deputy general counsel with Legg Mason/Citigroup Asset Management (CAM) North America LLC, where he served as head of the Investment Advisory Legal Team and as lead lawyer for the Investment Advisory Business of CAM North America LLC.  Previously, Mr. Shively served as head of the Investment Advisory Legal Team and lead lawyer for Global Institutional Asset Management and Retail & High Net Worth Managed Account business at Citigroup Asset Management.  Prior to joining Citigroup, he was assistant general counsel at Prudential Insurance Company, and was an associate at Milbank, Tweed, Hadley and McCloy.

Education

Mr. Shively received a B.A. in Political Science from Middlebury College in Vermont, where he graduated cum laude and was recognized with the Jarrett Award for Excellence in Law and American Politics.  He also holds a J.D. from New York University School of Law.  He is admitted to practice law in New York and New Jersey.
