| Parsippany, NJ, December 10, 2001 - MainStay, a division of New York Life Investment Management LLC, announced today that the Cyclones of Iowa State and Alabama Crimson Tide will take to the field for the MainStay Independence Bowl on Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, in Shreveport, Louisiana. The game will be nationally broadcast live on ESPN during prime time on December 27th starting at 6:30 p.m. CST (7:30 EST).
Representing the Big 12 Conference, the Cyclones of Iowa State University bring a 7-4 record with them into the postseason, finishing third in the northern division of the Big 12, behind only Nebraska and Colorado. This will be the Cyclones’ second consecutive bowl trip, having beaten Pittsburgh 37-29 in last year’s Insight.com bowl.
The SEC’s Alabama Crimson Tide bring a 6-5 record into the postseason with recent wins over Mississippi State, Auburn and Southern Miss. With an overall bowl record of 28-19-3, the MainStay Independence Bowl marks Alabama’s 51st bowl appearance. No other team in college football history has participated in more postseason bowl games.
The MainStay Independence Bowl marks the first time that Alabama and Iowa State will meet on the gridiron.
