How Long Can It Last? Prolonged Market Downturns are not Typical |
 |
While no one can say exactly how long the current market downturn will last, historically speaking, they seldom last longer than a year. In fact, there have been only four times that the Standard & Poor's 500® was down two or more years in a row. Looking at these historic downturns in the S&P—The Great Depression, World War II, the Oil Crisis, and the Tech Bubble—you can see that prolonged down markets are not typical and tend to be followed by a period of growth.
No one can say for sure when the financial markets will rebound, but now may be the time to prepare your portfolio to take advantage of any eventual recovery. Talk to your financial professional about reviewing the long-term potential of your portfolio, and be sure to ask him or her about the benefits of maintaining a disciplined investment strategy through all market cycles.
