Fiduciary Selection Checklist

An appointing fiduciary must engage in and document a prudent process for selecting and monitoring an investment advisor and/or investment manager.

Here are some items to check:
> The provider's qualifications and credentials, as well as the qualifications and credentials of its key people.
> The provider's licensing, including proper registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission and/or appropriate state authorities.
> References from other similarly situated plan sponsors.
> The provider's financial stability, including its fiduciary insurance coverage (and, where applicable, ERISA bonding coverage).
> The provider's willingness to assume fiduciary responsibility and liability for the services provided and to offer indemnification.
> Whether the provider has been subject to administrative enforcement actions or litigation.
> Whether the provider meets the requirements of an investment manager under ERISA Section 3(38) and acknowledges its fiduciary status in writing.
> The provider's fees.
> The provider's contract.
